Beavers Win - Upset Chapman

The Caltech Swim Team had their toughest weekend of travel heading out to Cal Lutheran on Saturday and then over to Chapman University on Sunday. The team was missing a few key swimmers which really hurt the overall team performance  against Cal Lu, a team they defeated last year. Peter Buhler, Justin Johnson and Peggy Allen dominated the competition and kept the meet close.

On Sunday the Beav's traveled to Chapman and SCIAC Champ Justin Johnson got things off to a good start just missing the NCAA National Cut on the one meter board. Buhler swam his times of the year: 200 free - 1:51.80 and 200 backstroke --2:05.30. At the halfway point, Chapman led 53 - 43. Freshman Jack Blackwood won his first event of the year taking the 100 Free and the rest of the team got the valuable second and third place finishes. On the three meter board, Johnson dove extremely well, finishing off with a double twisting front 1 ½ somersaults which scored 6, 6, 7. His final score of 267.20 is a National Cut on the three meter height. With Justin's win and freshmen Wade Hann-Caruther grabbing second place, the Techers took a slim 85 - 74 lead. When Caltech placed second, third, and fourth in the 200 Breaststroke it sealed the meet. Final Score: Caltech 94 and Chapman 84. The Lady Techers did not fare as well, losing the meet. Several of the women placed second in their events including Peggy Allen on the 1m, Erin Zampaglione on the 3m, and Justine Chia in the 50 free.

Next up for Beavers Aqautics is a trip to SCIAC foe Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, 1/23.

GO TECH!!!
