PASADENA (July 3, 2018) – The Caltech men's water polo team has unveiled its schedule for the 2018 season, which will consist of eight home contests, seven of which will come against SCIAC competition while another seven tournament matches start the season.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will open the season on the road for their first seven games, beginning at a preseason tournament in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. against Chaffey College and Santa Monica College. The Beavers will follow up the initial pair of games with four against schools in Erie, Pa., including Gannon University, Mercyhurst College, regular opponent Penn State University Behrend and Washington & Jefferson College.
Caltech will open the SCIAC portion of its schedule against California Lutheran University at home on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. The Beavers will turn around three days later and travel to 2017 regular season runner-up Whittier College for an 11 a.m. game before wrapping up September back in Pasadena against the University of La Verne at 11 a.m. on Sept. 29.
The men's water polo team will begin the month of October at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday, Oct. 3 before playing its next four games in Claremont at the annual Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament that weekend. Last year, the Beavers went 3-1 at the Claremont Convergence, picking up its second win against Oxy. This year, Caltech will open up the tournament against Oxy on Friday Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. before facing Connecticut College later in the day. Caltech met up with the Tigers three times last season, and are set to do so once again following a season sweep of the SCIAC rivals with the first win resulting in the Beavers' first SCIAC victory in 17 years.
The squad will return to Claremont the following day for a rematch with Behrend, followed by its final match of the tournament against McKendree University. The Beavers will follow the convergence by returning to SCIAC play at defending regular season and postseason tournament champions Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Wednesday, Oct. 10 before returning home for the next two games against Chapman University on Oct. 13 and Oxy for a third and final time on Oct. 16. Caltech will hit the road for the next two games, beginning on Oct. 18 at the University of Redlands before rematching Cal Lutheran on the 20th. The Beavers will remain in Thousand Oaks for a designated home game against Austin College that afternoon at 1:30 p.m, then close the month at home against Whittier on the 24th before traveling to La Verne for a 4 p.m. game on Halloween.
The Beavers will open November at home, first hosting CMS on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. before closing at home against Pomona-Pitzer on Senior Day the ensuing Wednesday. Caltech wraps its regular season on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Chapman. The SCIAC Postseason Tournament is slated for Friday, Nov. 16 and Sunday Nov. 18.
