PASADENA (June 27, 2017) – The Caltech men's water polo team has announced its schedule for the 2017 Fall season, which will include seven home games.
The Beavers open the season at Chaffey College (15-16 overall) on Sat, Sept. 2 in what will amount to a rubber match after the foes split meetings over the past two years, 11-10 in Chaffey's favor last season and 13-10 for Caltech the year prior. Head Coach Jon Bonafede's squad also will take on Ventura College as part of the Mini-Tournament before heading to Citrus College Sept. 8-9 for four games Caltech opens SCIAC play earlier than ever before with this year's move to a 14-game SCIAC schedule, beginning at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, Sept. 16.
The Beavers' home opener is set for Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. against SCIAC rival Occidental College. Last season, the Tigers finished eighth in the SCIAC with a 5-21 overall record and 2-9 SCIAC record. Caltech then heads back on the road for six games, starting at the University of La Verne (Sept. 30) and the University of Redlands (Oct. 4) and followed by the four-game Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament at CMS and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Oct. 6-7, when the Beavers will face Oxy, Penn St.-Behrend, McKendree University and Connecticut College. The Beavers picked up their first consecutive NCAA wins in 30 years last fall against McKendree and PSU-Behrend, in addition to the season-opening 16-13 victory over PSU-Behrend.
Caltech returns home for a single date with Chapman University on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., with a road game at Whittier College (Oct. 14) breaking up what would otherwise have been a four-game home stand that continues with Cal Lutheran University, Pomona-Pitzer and CMS the next Tuesday (4 p.m.), Thursday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (11 a.m.).
Oxy hosts Caltech in the rivals' third game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 28 before the final home stand of the fall as the Beavers welcome ULV on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. and Redlands on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. The regular season concludes with away games at Chapman (Nov. 8) and Pomona-Pitzer (Nov. 11).
The SCIAC Postseason Tournament, which for the first time will consist only of the top four seeds in the conference, will be held Friday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 19.
