FRESNO, CA – The Caltech men's water polo team traveled up I-5 for two non-conference match-ups with Fresno Pacific.
Game One – Fresno Pacific 16, Caltech 2 (Box Score)
The home squad opened the game by scoring the first quarter's only six goals. The Sunbirds stretch that 6-0 with the first goal in the second period. Caltech put their first goal on the board when Jim Blackwood found the back of the cage with 4:34 left in the frame. Fresno Pacific scored the final three goals of the half in taking a 10-1 lead after the first 16 minutes of action.
Fresno Pacific continued to put on a strong offensive display as they outscored the Beavers 3-0 in the third quarter. Tim MacDonald put the Beavers on the scoreboard for the second time in the game with a goal three minutes into the final period.
Game Two – Fresno Pacific 15, Caltech 4 (Box Score)
Saturday's second game started similarly to the first one as the Sunbirds put the first four scores on the board. The Beavers found the back of the cage when Patric Eck scored with 3:46 left in the stanza. However, Fresno Pacific strung together three consecutive goals before a Jim Blackwood goal with six second left in the quarter halted the scoring spree.
Trailing 7-2 to start the second period, Caltech's offense couldn't dwindled their deficit but a strong defensive effort kept the score close. Fresno Pacific put five shots on goal in the second stanza but Beavers goalie Ben Grabowksi made the save on four of them.
Caltech's Tommy Kwong hit the back of the cage on the Beavers first possession of the third quarter. However, the Sunbirds offense picked back up in the third quarter as they put three net finders on the board while holding the Beavers scoreless the rest of the stanza.
Fresno Pacific closed the afternoon with a 4-1 scoring edge in the final quarter. Kwong scored the Beavers lone goal in the final eight minutes.
