Strong Third Period Paces Pomona-Pitzer Over Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team used an early scoring spurt in the third period to help knock off Caltech 19-12 on Saturday morning in SCIAC match-up at the Braun Pool.

A back-and-forth first period saw the score tied twice and the lead change hands twice as the visitors held a 4-3 edge after the first eight minutes. The Sagehens pushed their lead to 6-3 with 5:24 left in the second stanza. Daniel Sexton found the back of the net with 4:36 remaining until halftime to get Caltech's deficit down to 6-4. However, Pomona-Pitzer closed the half on a 4-1 scoring spurt in taking a 10-5 lead at the intermission.

The Sagehens started the third frame with five unanswered goals in pushing their lead to 15-5 with 5:35 left until the buzzer. Caltech fought back with three straight goals by Sexton, Adam Khan and Jack Blackwood to get within 15-8 heading into the final frame.

Each team posted four goals in the final period as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the seven goal win.

Caltech got four goal efforts from Sexton and Khan during the morning's contest. Blackwood chipped in two goals while Solomon Chang scored his first collegiate goal to round out the home team's goal scorers.

The Sagehens offense was led by Karl Kimbier and Robert Chew's four goal performances.
