LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (May 4, 2018) – Freshmen Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) of the No. 33 and SCIAC #3 seed Caltech men's tennis team have garnered All-SCIAC honors for the first time in what have the potential to be two promising careers.
Shanker, who played all his singles matches this year out of the top spot, earned First Team All-SCIAC recognition, having won 11 matches while quickly ascending up the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's regional rankings where he currently sits at 13th. An extension of his regular season individual success came at the 118th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament where Shanker, seeded fifth in a 32-man field, made a run to the quarterfinals. Wei, meanwhile, compiled 15 total wins to set the program regular-season singles wins record and take Second Team All-SCIAC honors. Currently slotted in right behind Shanker, his doubles partner, in the ITA regional singles ranks, Wei also combined with his classmate to set the Caltech single-season doubles wins record to cap off an historic season. Like Shanker, their success as a duo is evident in their performance at Ojai, where they went on an unseeded run to the men's championship. Together, the duo are currently ranked eighth in the West region.
Additionally, Coach Mandy Gamble and her staff have been named SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year for the second time in three years. Gamble, along with assistants Lestter Yeh and Ervin Saravia, led the 33rd-ranked Beavers to an overall record of 11-6, and a 5-2 mark in SCIAC play to earn the third seed in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament after starting the season outside the top-40 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's rankings.
The Beavers will take on second-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Colleges today in Claremont for the right to move on to the SCIAC Championship. The match is set for a 3 p.m. start time. Check out a preview for the match here!
