PASADENA (Apr. 20, 2018) – Freshman James Wei took down two single-season records as the Caltech men's tennis team vanquished regional No. 13 California Lutheran University, 9-0, on Friday afternoon.
Wei began the day with an 8-3 victory at first doubles alongside fellow freshman Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow). With that win, the freshman pair surpassed the Pathireddy brothers' 2015 season as the winningest doubles season in program history. Wei and Shanker's 12 wins have them positioned atop a list that also includes junior teammates Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) and Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi). The duo has played all of their doubles matches together since the turn of the season and have managed a sterling 12-5 record en route to becoming the region's ninth-ranked doubles team.
Wei later made history in singles action as he defeated his opponent, 6-2, 6-2, out of the second singles position to earn his 15th victory of the season and now sits atop the single-season wins list having surpassed teammate Li's 14-win freshman season in 2016. The last Caltech player to hold the single-season singles and doubles wins records simultaneously was John Howard '06 back in 2003. Shanker, meanwhile picked up a routine, 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles for his 11th win of the season, which has him now tied for fourth all-time, though all 11 have come at first singles, the most out of that spot in recent memory. Freshman Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) also garnered his 11th singles victory of the season while junior Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) won his match, 6-2, 6-4 for his 12th victory this year, good for third all-time.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will have a quick turnaround to finish up their season at home against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 10 a.m.
