PASADENA (Apr. 12, 2018) – The Caltech men's tennis team has earned its highest national ranking of all time according to the latest rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Thanks to the men's team's efforts over the last couple of weeks, the Beavers are up two spots to No. 34 in the country. Caltech has not lost in SCIAC play since opening day against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, and in another first had two players appear in the regional singles rankings. Freshman Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) has moved up eight spots to 10th in the region and fellow freshman James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley), who is on the verge of tying the single-season singles wins record, has debuted at 13th in the rankings. The duo also moved up two spots to 11th in the regional doubles rankings and are also on the verge of setting the program wins record.
The news comes on the heels of one of the most successful weeks in the history of the program. The Beavers knocked off No. 13 University of Redlands over the weekend for their highest ranked win ever, which led to Shanker being named SCIAC Athlete of the Week for the second time this year, in addition to earning a D3tennis Player of the Week honorable mention along with junior Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine).
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will be back in SCIAC action on Friday the 13th when they take on Occidental College at Scholl Canyon.
