PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 15, 2018) – The Caltech men's tennis team has been unveiled as the No. 35 team in Division III according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings.
Caltech recently defeated No. 30 Christopher Newport University, 6-3, less than a month after narrowly falling to No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, 4-5, in the season opener on Feb. 10. This marks the first time in program history that both the men's and women's teams have been ranked simultaneously.
The news also comes on the heels of freshman Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) becoming the first Caltech tennis player of the season to receive SCIAC Athlete of the Week recognition. Shanker, along with doubles partner James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley), led the Beavers by each going 2-0 in singles action and 2-0 as a team this past week. Shanker earned his distinction by defeating CNU's top player, ranked 36th in Division III entering the year, in a three-set classic last Monday in Pasadena. The Caltech freshmen have buoyed the Beavers so far in 2018, and along with classmate Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day), the rookies have combined to go 14-5 in singles action while the Shanker-Wei doubles team has yielded four wins, including a ranked win against No. 16 University of Mary Washington. Overall, the Beavers have compiled above-.500 records at all but one court in both singles and doubles early this spring.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will head to the southwest later this week for two matches, the first of which will occur at No. 26 University of Texas-Tyler on Sunday, Mar. 18.
