PASADENA (Apr. 15, 2017) – The Caltech men's tennis team returned to friendly confines to battle No. 10 University of the Redlands on Saturday.
Several close results ultimately stung the shorthanded Beavers' chances of pulling out the upset in the team's second match in as many days. Sophomore Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) came just a few points away from pulling out a victory for the Beavers in a thrilling third singles match. Li dropped the first set in a 3-7 in the tiebreaker but rallied to a 7-5 second set victory before coming up short in the 10-4 super tiebreaker. Li came almost as close to victory in his doubles match as well. Teaming with fellow sophomore Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon), the duo pushed the Bulldogs' second doubles team before stumbling 9-7.
Senior Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) also pushed for a win against a top-25 player in Chase Lipscomb. The two top players traded 6-4 results in the first and second set before Lipscomb edged Pathireddy 11-9 in the super tiebreaker.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will have some time to rest before they take on SCIAC foe Whittier College in the final match of the regular season at 10 a.m. Seniors Ruthwick Pathireddy, Sathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) and Morgan Lebby (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach) will be honored before the match.
