Usual Suspects Lead Men’s Tennis to Third Straight Win

LONGVIEW, Texas (Mar. 25, 2016) – Freshmen Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi) and Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) and junior Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) each won their eighth, seventh and sixth singles matches, respectively, as Caltech men's tennis topped LeTourneau University, 6-2, on Friday morning.

Box Score

The Beavers improve to 6-4 on the season and are now 5-1 against unranked NCAA opposition, in addition to their first-ever victory over a nationally ranked team in No. 34 Cal Lutheran University back on Feb. 26.

Doubles were extremely tight all the way through, with the Beavers taking both #2 and #3 in quick succession, 8-6 and 8-5.  The battle at #1 went to 8-7 with the Beavers looking to force a tiebreak, but LeTourneau came away with the 9-7 victory.

Holding the 2-1 match lead, Caltech had the edge going into singles and maintained the lead right through the clinching point.  Senior Rushikesh Joshi (Sunnyvale, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty) picked up his second win of the season at the top court (6-1, 6-4) and Pathireddy sandwiched a LeTourneau victory at #2 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #3.  Liu clinched moments later at #5 (6-0, 6-2), followed by Li finishing up at #4 (6-2, 6-1) before the final match went unfinished.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers conclude their Texas trip with a major regional matchup at No. 27 UT-Tyler (10-5), which went 0-4 during a trip to Southern California last week, on Saturday.
