Caltech Senior Tennis Player Aces Churchill Scholarship

As true scholar-athlete, Vivek Narsimhan, a senior in chemical engineering and three year varsity letterman in men's tennis, has been selected as one of 13 students to receive a prestigious Churchill Scholarship for the academic year 2008-2009. Beginning next fall, Narsimhan will spend nine months pursuing a certificate in advanced mathematics as a student in the University of Cambridge's Churchill College.

This was a particularly competitive year for the program, sponsored by the Winston Churchill Foundation, because the number of eligible universities rose significantly, resulting in a 60-percent increase in the number of applications. Additionally, the Advanced Mathematics category in which Narsimhan applied was especially popular. According to the foundation, one of the reasons Narsimhan stood out from other applicants was because of his intention to apply his graduate study mathematics at Cambridge to later graduate study in chemical engineering.

Head Tennis Coach Mandy Gamble is very optimistic and feels that Vivek has progressed very nicely throughout his 3 years on the squad, "Vivek will play in the #1 or #2 slot for our men this season" commented Coach Gamble.

Men's tennis will open the season on Saturday, January 26th at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.
