PASADENA, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2017) – Junior Dylan Lu (Kingwood, Texas / Kingwood) opened the 2017-18 season with a pair of individual event victories and another relay win as Caltech men's swim & dive hosted the University of Redlands on Saturday.
Lu kicked off the winning 200 Medley Relay team that included sophomore Thomas Gallup (Houston, Texas / Phillips Exeter Acad.) and juniors Henry Steiner (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) and Jonathan Willett (Edina, Minn. / Edina). After Lu's backstroke leg, Gallup took over with a blazing 25.94 breaststroke split to gain a lead that would not be relinquished and resulted in the third-fastest time in program history. Lu went on to win both the 100 and 200 Back with solid times of 54.80 and 1:59.37.
Freshman Andy Rothstein (Potomac, Md. / Winston Churchill), meanwhile, posted the fastest 50 Back split in the pool on the B relay at 25.89 and later recorded a pair of program Top-10 times in the 200 (1:48.44) and 500 Free (4:59.74). Fellow rookie Adam Kogan (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa East) also impressed in his debut as he posted the fifth-fastest time ever in the 1000 Free (10:30.52). Gallup and Steiner each claimed individual event victories in the 100 Breast and Fly, respectively, to wrap up a positive first showing of the season.
Head Coach Paul Hughes and the Beavers head to the University of La Verne for their second meet of the season and final of the Fall term on Saturday, Nov. 18.
