Swank Makes Season High in Saves; Whittier Bests Caltech
WHITTIER, Calif. – In their final road contest of the 2012 season the Caltech men's soccer team fell to Whittier 5-0 on Monday evening.
Kevin Hartsough got things going as he put the Poets on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 15th minute when he received a ball from Pablo Gomez at the top of the box, which he squeezed past an outstretched Wesley Swank and into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Six minutes later, Brian Russell got into the mix scoring off of a free kick from 30 yards out when he lofted a ball into the top right corner of the goal over Swank to put the home squad up 2-0 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Whittier continued their aggressive play with Gregorio Giorgi adding his first goal of the season when he tapped in a rebound that came off of Swank. But Whittier wasn't done there as Lucas Depinna came down five minutes later and tapped in the fourth goal of the contest after he one timed a pass in from Francis Maxwell.
Whittier was able to add an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Jasper Albright tallied his second goal of the season. It was the final goal and final shot of the night for the Poet who posted a 29-9 edge in total shots, with 17 of them being on frame.
Mitchele Arene had a team best four total shots while Alec Sands' two shots on goal were a Caltech best on the evening.
Swank finished with a season high 12 saves for Caltech.
