Caltech Can’t Convert Opportunities, Falls 3-0
PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech created a number of great opportunities, but was unable to convert as an early Whittier goal helped the visiting Poets on their way to a 3-0 win.
Lucas Depinna scored the first goal of the match in only the third minute when he was able to tap in a free kick from Adolfo Santos. Santos was taking the kick from the right side of the field. Depinna beat the man who was marking him and tapped the ball into the net.
In the 20th minute, Whittier's goalkeeper David Diaz dropped the ball after coming out for a cross attempt. The ball fell to Thomas Kwok who had an excellent bicycle kick attempt while the Diaz was out of the net, but he could not find the target as he pushed the ball right of the goal.
After Caltech missed, Whittier broke towards Caltech end, Depinna had the ball on the right flank. He sent a cross into the middle which Srdan Jovanovic headed on target, but Wesley Swank made an acrobatic save to knock the ball off the post. Jovanovic was able to head the ball into the net after it came off the post.
Caltech had another great opportunity in the 49th minute when Kunmi Jeje got in behind the defense but his shot from the left side went wide right. A minute later Jeje had another chance as he worked his way down the endline. He was able to dribble past a Whittier defender, and draw the keeper before trying to center the ball to Marec Serlin, but it was cut out before Serlin could put it in the empty net.
Whittier put the game away in the 62nd minute when Depinna scored his second goal of the match. Kevin Hartsough dribbled past a Caltech defender cut back to his right foot and sent the ball from the right flank into the box. Depinna again beat his man and directed the ball past Swank.
The Beavers were able to amass a season high nine shots.
