PASADENA (Aug. 7, 2018) – The Caltech men's and women's fencing teams have released the schedule for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
The two teams will open at home with the IFCSC Collegiate Open, Caltech's first home fencing event since last year's NCAA West Regional. The men's epee squad brought the IFCSC Championship back to Pasadena last season and will look for similar results this season, returning rising senior Qifan Wang (Surrey, Canada / Semiahmoo Secondary) and sophomores Zimo Zhu (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and Ethan Jaszewski (Denver, Col. / Colorado Academy). Head Coach Carla Corbit and the Beavers will then participate in the IFCSC Mega Meet in Riverside, Calif. the following weekend before a select few individuals return to action in November for the Bladerunner ROC. The Beavers began to make waves at last year's Bladerunner, with Zhu coming out of pool play with the No. 1 seed en route to a third-place finish in the men's epee.
The Beavers will break for winter until the Air Force-hosted Western Invitational on Jan. 12, followed by two days at the Northwestern Duals on February 2 and 3. Caltech will then compete at the UCI-ASU IFCSC Mini Meet in La Jolla (Feb. 24) as a tune-up before those who qualify participate in the NCAA West Regional on Sunday, Mar. 10. Corbit and the Beavers will be looking to send their top regional finishers to the NCAA Championships beginning on Mar. 22, running through Mar. 25.
