PASADENA (Aug. 3, 2017) – Caltech men's fencing is set to welcome three newcomers to a roster that has posted arguably its best consecutive finishes in program history.
Andrew Chan (Denver, Colo.)
Ethan Jaszewski (Denver, Colo.)
Zimo Zhu (Buffalo Grove, Ill.)
Chan is expected to fill the shoes of graduating senior Matthew Jin, who led the foil squad all four years as a three-time regional qualifier. A nationally rated fencer in foil, he has competed in the US Junior Olympics, North America Cup and US Summer Nationals.
"We are happy to have Andrew stepping into our starting lineup," Head Coach Carla Corbit said. "His high-level competitive experience will set the tone for the foil group next season."
Jaszewski brings a versatile skillset as another nationally rated fencer who has competed in the US Junior Olympics, NAC and US Summer Nationals.
"Ethan will be a starter in foil and provide excellent depth in the epee," Corbit said. "He will be a strong contributor to both squads."
Buffalo Grove, Ill.
An A-rated fencer entering Caltech, Zhu also has competed in the three major youth competition circuits and joins fellow A-rated rising junior Qifan Wang (Surrey, Canada / Semiahmoo Secondary) and rising senior Ethan Lo (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto Senior) in what will be a formidable squad within the West Region after claiming the IFCSC title last season.
"Zimo brings years of nationally competitive experience to Caltech," Corbit said. "We look forward to him working with the team toward our first overall league championship in 2018."
