BUDAPEST, Hungary (June 22, 2018) – Departing senior David Kawashima (Studio City, Calif. / North Hollywood) joined a team of 10 fellow SCIAC men's basketball players on a trip to Europe for an exhibition playing tour through three different countries.
The SCIAC All-Stars left California on May 31 and spent four days in Prague, Czech Republic, followed by a quick stay in Bratislava, Slovakia before finishing up the tour in Budapest. Previous SCIAC All-Star teams have visited Italy, Greece, Iceland and Denmark. Kawashima played arguably his best game of the tour in Prague against a club developmental team, chasing down several loose balls while assisting on several big shots to put the game out of reach.
Whittier College Head Coach Mark Jensen, who coached the all-stars overseas remarked at the team's ability to overcome rivalries within the conference to play together while also bonding on a personal level during the week in Eastern Europe.
"Every year I'm amazed at how quickly the guys from different teams and schools come together and bond," Jensen said. "Guys who in many cases really dislike guys from other teams over their years of competition in the conference, but there's a kind of magic that takes place when you do a trip like this – you know, one last chance to play organized, competitive high level basketball."
