Gee Breaks Out Against Pomona-Pitzer

PASADENA (Jan. 3, 2017) – Freshman guard Marcus Gee (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) came up big for Caltech men's basketball, posting a career night against visiting Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Wednesday evening.

Gee lit up the Sagehens for 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting and went 5-for-10 from beyond the arc for the best performance of his young Caltech career. The freshman provided the Beavers consistent scoring throughout a game in which the Beavers entered the second half with a one-point lead. He provided sophomore guard Alec Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) and the rest of his teammates plenty of assist chances to fill the stat sheet with. Andrews finished the game with a solid all-around line, nine points, and a team-high eight rebounds and five assists. Two of Andrews' assists came on Ross Carter (Sudbury, Mass. / The Rivers School) layups as the big man had perhaps his most productive game of the season: six points and six rebounds in 32 minutes of action.

The Beavers turned in one of their perhaps their most methodical ball-handling game of the season, committing just six turnovers. The extra efficiency led to 68 shot attempts and 29 three-point attempts, both season highs. Caltech also dominated on second-chance points where they outscored Pomona-Pitzer by 10 in that distinction and outrebounded them at a 4:1 clip on the offensive end. The two teams traded the lead early in the second half before the visitors took the lead for good with 16 minutes to play. The Gee-led Beavers hung around and made plays to keep themselves in the game late, but ultimately ran out of time against a Sagehens team returning almost all of their primary contributors from a year ago. A quick start from Caltech also proved to be a cause for optimism. The Beavers opened the game on a 9-1 run and let its SCIAC foe know from the onset they were going to be in for a fight.

Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will begin the first of a three-game road stint when the travel to the University of Redlands on Saturday, Jan. 6 for a 2:00 p.m.
