CLAREMONT, Calif. (Jan. 19, 2017) – Senior Nasser Al-Rayes (Doha, Qatar / American School of Doha) recaptured his dominant form from earlier in the SCIAC schedule and anchored Caltech on both sides of the ball in Thursday's men's basketball loss at Pomona-Pitzer College.
Al-Rayes led the way with 16 points to go with 12 evenly distributed rebounds between offense and defense. Nine of those rebounds came in the first half. He also led all players with three blocks. Al-Rayes has now double-doubled in three out of four games in which he has scored at least 10 points. He also shot over 50 percent from the field. Fellow senior David LeBaron (San Diego, Calif. / Francis Parker) seconded Al-Rayes with nine points, six rebounds and one steal, while freshman Alec Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) came away with three steals of his own.
Caltech ran into most of its problems in the second half. The Beavers surrendered a quick three-pointer within the first 10 seconds to increase the Sagehens' lead to 10. Caltech held its SCIAC foes in check for most of the half before letting up in the final nine minutes of the game. The Sagehens embarked on a 13-2 scoring run between the nine and three minute mark while the Beavers were unable to keep up and play at the pace they played at in the game's first 30 minutes.
The Beavers trailed the Sagehens, 32-25, at halftime.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will now turn their attention to Saturday when they travel to University of La Verne for a 4 p.m. game.
