La Verne Rallies to Down Caltech 59-51

PASADENA, CA – Despite trailing for a majority of the game, La Verne overcame Caltech down the stretch to post a 59-51 win on Wednesday evening.

La Verne started the game on fire by hitting their first six field goal attempts but the Beavers were up to the challenge. Caltech clamped down on defense the rest of the period and held the visitors to just four made baskets on their last 13 attempts of the half. In addition to keeping the Leopards shots at bay, the Beavers forced La Verne into 12 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

Caltech converted all those La Verne miscues into 15 first half points in helping them grab a 38-30 lead at intermission. The Beavers offense was clicking well as they connected on half of their 30 field goal attempts.

The Leopards played more effectively on both sides of the ball in the second half. They turned the ball over six times and held Caltech to five field goals on 29 attempts.

With 13:41 remaining until the final buzzer Caltech held a 44-36 lead after an Andrew Hogue jumper. La Verne began to trim their deficit. The visitors scored 16 of the next 21 points as they took a 52-49 lead with 4:14 left in the contest. Caltech scored on its next possession to get back within a single point but La Verne upped their lead back to three on its next opportunity.

On Caltech's ensuing possession they had two three-pointers glance off the rim before La Verne gained control with just under three minutes left. La Verne increased their lead to 56-51 on Ronn See's running lay-up with 2:07 remaining. The Beavers couldn't find the bottom of the net on their next opportunity. Weston Newell scored the game's final field goal on a lay-up with 1:08 left to put La Verne up 58-51.

See led all scorers with a 20-point evening as the senior went 8-for-13 from the floor. Newell scored eight of his 13 points in the second half to round out the double figure scorers for the Leopards.

Hogue scored in double figures for the third time in the last five games by scoring a team high 11 points. Kc Emezie grabbed a career best 12 rebounds while playing all but four minutes.
