Defensive Effort Paces CMS to Victory; Hogue Continues Steady Play

CLAREMONT, CA – The ClaremontMuddScripps men's basketball team remained undefeated in league play as they posted a 75-50 win over Caltech on Saturday evening.

Through the game's first 15 minutes neither team secured a lead larger than seven points until the contest started to swing in favor of the home team. After a Ricky Galliani trimmed the Stags lead to 22-19 with 5:19 left in the half, ClaremontMuddScripps clamped down on defense. The Stags scored 13 straight points to grab a 35-19 edge. Luke Lango ended the first half scoring as he connected on Caltech's third three-pointer of the half with three ticks left in the frame. The home team carried a 35-22 lead into the locker room.

ClaremontMuddScripps grew their 13-point halftime lead by nailing nine of their first 11 field goal attempts to start the second half. That solid shooting effort gave them a 55-32 lead with 11:59 left in the game. The Stags kept the Beavers at bay the rest of the way as they upped their record to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in league play.

The Stags, who entered the contest as the SCIAC's top defense, held their opponent to less than 60 points for the 11th time this season. Moreover, it is the sixth straight game the Stags opposition failed to hit the 60-point barrier.

Andrew Hogue continued his strong production on the offensive end for the Beavers. He scored a team high 11 points while grabbing a squad best six rebounds. It is the third time in the last four games the junior has scored in double figures. Hogue has now led the team in rebounding in 12 of their 16 games.

Tyler Gaffaney led all scorers with a 28-point evening on the strength of a 12-for-15 shooting effort from the floor.

Caltech gets right back at it with another road contest against a SCIAC foe when they face Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
