PASADENA, Calif. – A late first half scoring run spurred the Occidental men's basketball team to a 62-54 win over Caltech in a SCIAC match-up on Saturday night.
The opening minutes of the first half were fast pace as Caltech (5-15, 0-9 SCIAC) raced out to a 16-10 lead less than six minutes into the game. The Beavers grew that lead to as large as 25-18 with 9:42 remaining in the stanza. During the final portion of the first frame, Occidental (8-11, 4-5 SCIAC) mounted a comeback that swung all the game's momentum into their favor.
The visitors concluded the half by outscoring the Beavers 20-4 in taking a 38-29 lead into the locker room. During their final closing spurt to end the half, the Tigers scored on 11 of 15 possessions while connecting on nine of their 17 field goal attempts.
Caltech scored on their first possession of the second half to cut their deficit down to seven points but the Tigers responded with eight unanswered points in taking their largest lead of the night at 46-31.
An undaunted Beavers squad dwindled their deficit to eight points at 58-50 with 3:45 left in the contest after a Michael Edwards three-pointer. The home squad had three consecutive possessions to cut into the Tigers lead but couldn't as Occidental salted away the game.
Alex Runkel had the best game of his career for the Beavers by recording 16 points and 16 rebounds. Both numbers represent personal bests for the junior. Michael Edwards chipped in a game high 17 points while Andrew Hogue contributed an 11-point evening.
Occidental was led by Deshun McCoy's 15-point night off the bench.
