Laura Decker Qualifies for NCAA Fencing Championships

Caltech junior Laura Decker has qualified for and will compete in the women’s sabre at the 2010 NCAA Fencing Championships to be contested at Harvard University on March 25 and 26.  Fencing is an NCAA National Championship sport and thus all three divisions compete at the same national championship event.  Decker finished second at the NCAA West Regional last weekend competing against Air Force, Stanford and UC San Diego and she now joins a field of 72 women fencers at the national championships.  The field of 72 women is broken down in three groups of 24, one group for each weapon (epee, foil and saber).

“Coming out of the west region is no easy task for Tech” commented Michael D’Asaro, head coach, “Laura had to fence against the likes of Stanford, UC San Diego and Air Force Academy to qualify, being the only Division III program in the west is truly challenging and rewarding”. 

“It is very exciting for Caltech to send a student-athlete to this prestigious event” commented Wendell Jack, Caltech AD.  Jack also serves at the chair of the NCAA Fencing Committee.  “The final field of 144 men and women are all very accomplished fencers (including Olympians) and from very impressive institutions, with only 6 of 144 coming from Division III and the only woman coming from Caltech is truly special”.
