Stags, Beavers Tangle in League Set
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Caltech continued league play with a three-game set this weekend with the first game in Claremont, Calif. on Friday afternoon and the doubleheader in Pasadena, Calif. on Saturday.
Game One – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 18, Caltech 1 (Box Score)
The Stags scored a run in every inning the came to the plate in posting the victory.
With Claremont-Mudd-Scripps holding a 3-1 edge heading into the bottom of the third inning, the Stags grabbed control of the game with a five-run inning. The home squad concluded the game in the bottom of the sixth with an eight run stanza.
Scott Witte was one of six Stag players to have a two-hit afternoon. The sophomore also scored two and drove in a pair as well.
Brendan Sheehan went 2-for-3 for the Beavers. Brian Penserini scored the Caltech run.
Game Two – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 14, Caltech 5 (Box Score)
All but two of the Stags starters registered a hit as the visitors built a 11-1 lead after five innings.
Holding a 4-0 lead after three innings, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps all but put the game away with three runs in the fourth inning and a four spot in the fifth inning.
Chad Hadzinsky held the Beavers hitless through the first four innings before Brian Penserini broke through with a double in the fifth. He eventually scored Caltech's first run on a Brendan Sheehan single.
Caltech plated a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings respectively. Blaine Matulevich and Albie Lavin crossed the plate in the sixth while Ryan Casey and Matulevich scored in the seventh inning.
Williams Knowles led the offense for the Stags getting two hits while scoring three runs and driving in three.
Lavin and Penserini each had two hits in the opener. Eric Schropp contributed two RBI's.
Game Three – Claremont-Mudd-Scipps 15, Caltech 3 (Box Score)
The Stags jumped out to a 9-1 lead after the first three innings. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored five in the first inning then put a pair of runs on the board in the second and third innings respectively. They proceeded to push across three more runs in the fourth inning to increase their advantage to 12-1.
Caltech put a pair of runs on the board in the fourth inning with runs by Nick Robertson and Ryan Casey but the Stags plated the game's final three runs in taking the series.
Brett Watanabe had two hits and three RBI's while scoring two more runs to lead the Stags.
Albie Lavin and Robertson each had two hits for the Beavers.
